APP Camp Returns to Taiwan After a Decade, Exploring the Diversity and Creativity of Central Taiwan’s Arts Ecosystem

2025/11/25-26, Taichung, Taiwan

The Asian Producers’ Platform Camp (APP Camp)—initiated by independent producers and organizations from Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and Australia—aims to explore Asia’s cultural landscape, foster creative practices in performing arts production, promote cross-cultural exchange, and cultivate future arts leaders. After a decade, this significant event for the Asia-Pacific performing arts community returns to Taiwan and Okinawa, Japan.

This year’s program attracted over 60 producers from across the Asia-Pacific region. Through multiple Group Research teams, participants conducted field studies and in-depth exchanges in cities including Kaohsiung, Tainan, Taichung, Changhua, and Taitung, each focusing on different themes. Among them, the Central Taiwan Research Group, curated by Ars Association, led 11 producers under the theme “In Pursuit of a Place Where Art Can Dwell” to visit arts spaces in Taichung and its surroundings, investigating the multifaceted connections between art, community, and environment. This initiative naturally fostered knowledge exchange, cultural engagement, and opened doors for future collaborations.

The 11 producers hail from Australia, South Korea, Thailand, India, New Zealand, the Philippines, Japan, Singapore, and Vietnam, bringing expertise in cross-cultural collaboration, public art in shared spaces, performing arts curation, theater production, audience development, community engagement, youth empowerment, interdisciplinary projects, and international networking. Their diverse planning and cultural practices reflect strong professional influence and rich experience within global arts networks.

The Central Taiwan group visited National Taichung Theater, Glitch, Downtown Renaissance Association, and Lukang Arts Festival, observing efforts by public institutions to advance professional development in the arts sector, the experimental spirit of independent spaces, and cultural practices in local revitalization—showcasing the resilience and creativity of the region’s arts ecosystem.

Beyond the research itinerary, an exchange event was held on November 25 at Ars Association Base, sponsored by the Taichung City Government Cultural Affairs Bureau, featuring a warm and lively gathering. Ars Association invited local artists and APP Camp participants for face-to-face sharing, including TimeArt Studio, 20% Experimental Theatre, Lit Art, Daily Production Dance Company, and S. Dance, discussing how to break boundaries and challenge creative practices in non-traditional spaces under the resource constraints of today’s environment. Representatives from National Taichung Theater, Taichung Museum of Fine Arts, and Mizen Space also attended, highlighting the collaborative spirit between grassroots initiatives and public institutions.

Ars Association believes that art is a bridge connecting local communities and the world. Through creation, we explore cultural diversity, respond to social issues, and promote interdisciplinary collaboration and international exchange—making art a force for public dialogue and cultural innovation. Through APP Camp’s international engagement, Asia-Pacific producers delved into Central Taiwan’s cultural vitality, fostering cross-sector partnerships and injecting new energy into performing arts, paving the way for future collaborations.

✨Special thanks to our Central Taiwan partners:

An extraordinary gathering for performing arts professionals took place in central Taiwan.

On November 25th, the gathering was organized in three different aspects:

☆ In the morning, more than ten participants gathered in Taichung’s old city area for a guided tour. In a city where the past and present coexist, the tour provided a perspective from the firsthand experiences of the “Hidden”, the individuals who once living on the streets. This allowed the participants to perceive the old within the new and the new within the old. Through participation, we hoped to bring warmth to these “Hidden” individuals.

☆ Since the launch of the Asian Producers’ Platform CAMP in 2013 (from the premeeting period), the discussion of the role of a Taiwanese performing arts producer has emerged and has a clearer positioning. Initiated by four countries, including Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Australia, the camp is organized annually in different cities and countries for knowledge and experience exchange.

Yesterday afternoon, we brought the international network to Taichung. The APP CAMP – Taiwan team hosted a sharing session involving six Taiwanese producers. They shared trends in the arts and cultural environments across various Asian countries since 2014, offering reflections and proposals for arts developments. This marked the first time the APP CAMP departed from the capital to conduct such a sharing session in Taichung, embodying the practice of “decentralization.”

We believe this professional knowledge, information and practice sharing session broadened the perspectives of attendees, whether creators, producers, or institution operators, generating new keywords for their work.

☆ The third activity- PANDA BAR (Performing Arts Network Development Association) which co-organized with Ars Association, welcomed a surprise guest today: Mr. Kyu Choi, the initiator of APP CAMP and current Artistic Director of the Seoul Performing Arts Festival (SPAF), ensuring a complete connection for today’s event.

The PANDA BAR, gathered 40 producers, independent creators, creative teams, venues from the north and central regions, government agencies from the south, and non-profit organizations. We invited four central Taiwan performing arts teams to share their artistic and creative concepts, including the 日日製作 Daily Production純白舍Dance Lab唯,劇場 V.TheatreGroup and 藝術報國 Ars Association. Stepping into the grassroots environment, there are more dedicated creators in central Taiwan worthy of attention.

We are thrilled to update and connect with everyone in such a dynamic setting.

Performing Arts Network Development Association (PANDA) aims to provide a platform for exchange of experiences among arts administrators and producers in the arts and cultural field, holding irregular gatherings. This first visit to Taichung witnessed an enthusiastic atmosphere. Besides welcoming more professionals to join PANDA, it also welcome invitations from other cities.

Perhaps the next PANDA BAR will take place in your city.
